How to import from Poland to the Gulf: six steps

  1. 1. Find and vet a Polish supplier

Use the PAIH trade offices, KOWR's Poland Tastes Good programme and Gulfood (Dubai) to reach producers. For meat and poultry, check that the plant is on the SFDA list of approved Polish establishments; the SFDA publishes separate lists for Polish poultry (updated December 2025) and bovine meat, and some plants are marked temporarily suspended.

  2. 2. Halal certificate from a recognised body

Saudi Arabia requires a halal slaughter certificate for every shipment of meat, poultry and their products, issued by a certification body recognised by the SFDA Halal Center; mandatory halal certification was extended to further food categories from November 2023. Polish bodies that appear on circulating copies of the SFDA list are Halal Correct Poland and Polski Instytut Halal, but those copies are undated: always confirm on halal.sfda.gov.sa or at halal@sfda.gov.sa before contracting. For the UAE, the certifier must be registered with MoIAT; check MoIAT's current register of halal certification bodies. The UAE national halal mark itself is optional.

  3. 3. Register the importer and product with the authority

Food for Saudi Arabia: all food products must be registered with the SFDA before import, the importer needs an SFDA account and a commercial registration covering food trade, and foreign food establishments are registered through the SFDA. Non-food (KSA): the importer requests a Product Certificate of Conformity (PCoC) and, per consignment, a Shipment Certificate of Conformity (SCoC) through SASO's SABER platform from an approved conformity assessment body; unregulated products may need only a self-declaration. Medicines and cosmetics have their own SFDA procedures. UAE: use the MoIAT / local municipality rules for food and conformity.

  4. 4. Shipping routes and transit times

Polish containers leave from the Baltic ports of Gdańsk (DCT) and Gdynia, usually with a transhipment, towards Jeddah (Red Sea), Dammam (Gulf) and Jebel Ali (Dubai). A route planner lists about 23 days for Gdańsk to Jeddah (sailings every 1 to 2 weeks) and about 43 days for the fastest Gdynia to Jebel Ali route; a forwarder's LCL service in 2024 quoted about 43 days. These are indicative: ask your forwarder for the current schedule. Use reefer containers for chilled and frozen food.

  5. 5. Incoterms, payment and commercial terms

Agree an Incoterm (typically FCA/FOB Gdańsk or CIF/CFR Jeddah, Dammam or Jebel Ali), payment terms (letter of credit or advance payment for first orders), and the labelling language: Arabic labelling and shelf-life rules apply to food. Insurance and temperature monitoring should be written into the contract. This step is general trade practice and is not tied to a single official source.

  6. 6. Export documents from Poland

The EU and the GCC have no free trade agreement, so EUR.1 preferential origin does not apply; the exporter provides a commercial invoice, packing list and, where the buyer requires it, a non-preferential certificate of origin issued by a Polish chamber of commerce, which for Saudi Arabia may need legalisation (the legalisation route depends on the exporting country, so check with the Polish chamber and the Saudi embassy). Meat and poultry also need a veterinary health certificate issued by Poland's Chief Veterinary Inspectorate (GIW) for Saudi Arabia.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a reliable Polish supplier?

Start with the exporters directory on this site, the PAIH trade offices, KOWR's Poland Tastes Good programme or Gulfood in Dubai. For meat and poultry, check that the plant is on the SFDA list of approved Polish establishments, because some plants are marked temporarily suspended.

Is a halal certificate required to import meat from Poland to Saudi Arabia?

Yes. Saudi Arabia requires a halal slaughter certificate for every shipment of meat, poultry and their products, issued by a certification body recognised by the SFDA Halal Center. Mandatory halal certification was extended to further food categories from November 2023. Confirm the current list of recognised bodies on halal.sfda.gov.sa before contracting.

What registration does a Saudi importer need for food from Poland?

All food products must be registered with the SFDA before import. The importer needs an SFDA account and a commercial registration covering food trade, and foreign food establishments are registered through the SFDA. Non-food goods may need SASO conformity certificates (PCoC and SCoC) through the SABER platform.

How long does shipping from Poland to the Gulf take?

Containers leave from Gdańsk and Gdynia, usually with a transhipment, towards Jeddah, Dammam and Jebel Ali. A route planner lists about 23 days from Gdańsk to Jeddah and about 43 days for the fastest Gdynia to Jebel Ali route. Which Incoterms and payment terms are typical?

Typically FCA or FOB Gdańsk, or CIF/CFR to Jeddah, Dammam or Jebel Ali, with a letter of credit or advance payment for first orders. Arabic labelling and shelf-life rules apply to food. This is general trade practice and is not tied to a single official source.

Which export documents are needed?

The EU and the GCC have no free trade agreement, so EUR.1 preferential origin does not apply.
